A tribute to Malcolm Douglas – adventurer, conservationist, Kimberley legend and Save The Kimberley Director.

Save The Kimberley is mourning the loss of Save The Kimberley Director  Malcolm Douglas who died in a tragic car accident and was found in the morning 23 September 2010.

Malcolm was an inspirational man. Save The Kimberley will miss him and he leaves an important legacy.

Save The Kimberley are continuing our work.

“I THINK I WOULD LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED AS SOMEONE WHO HELPED PROTECT THE KIMBERLEY  FOR ALL TIME . PROBABLY THROUGH WORLD HERITAGE LISTING .” – Malcolm Douglas.

The following is an excerpt from a statement was written by Malcolm’s son:

Our family has lost it’s patriarch, Mandy and I have lost our Father and our children will never get to know their Grandfather. This is so sad for us.

Australia has lost an icon and a legend. The Kimberley has lost one of it’s greatest sons.

Malcolm has departed without having the opportunity to offer his gratitude to the people of Australia who have watched and enjoyed Malcolm’s TV shows over more than four decades. For those people I would like to say thank you. Your support made him very proud.

Malcolm was Australia’s most enduring independent TV producer. He had a very long TV career, but he did it not to seek celebrity status and wanted to use his profile to further the causes he believed in.

If I had to describe my father in a single word it would be “authentic”. What you saw is what you got. He was the toughest and bravest man you’d ever meet. He was one of the last true adventurers.

Malcolm’s vision was of the Kimberley protected and given the World Heritage status it deserves, We hope that people all over Australia and the world will help realise this goal. Malcolm did not support the imposition of a LNG processing plant at James Price Point or the compulsory acquisition of land from Indigenous people for this development. Save The Kimberley will mourn the loss of a great champion for the protection of the Kimberley, we pay tribute to adventurer, conservationist, Kimberley legend and Save The Kimberley Director, Malcolm Douglas.

Our family was devastated to hear the news of Malcolm’s death. Malcolm stood for everything we believe in, my two young boys are always riveted to his documentaries. Each time we have visited Broome, we have called in to the “Crocodile Park”, in the hope that we might one day meet Malcolm himself. You could see how much he loved the animals and the Kimberley. Malcolm will be sorely missed. I hope we are able to stop the gas hub, and carry on working to save the bilbies in his honour. Western ustralia just lost its greatest ambassador!
